What is a Cholecystectomy?
Cholecystectomy is the medical name of surgery to remove your gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ just below the liver. Its main purpose is to produce a type of digestive fluid called bile. Although the gallbladder is very helpful for digestion, it is not essential. Therefore, it can be removed without much affecting normal life.
Causes of Gallbladder Problems
Gallstones are the most common cause of gallbladder disease. Gallstones are crystals that form inside the gallbladder. Crystals form when too much cholesterol or too much bilirubin accumulates in an organ or duct. As a result, it inhibits the flow of digestive enzymes.
The presence of gallstones in the bladder or duct results in bloating, pain, indigestion and vomiting as they block the flow of enzymes through the bile duct to the small intestine. If left untreated, it can lead to a serious medical condition and leads to jaundice. Therefore, it is necessary to treat the stones.
Types of Surgery:
The procedure for removal of the gallbladder is called Cholecystectomy. Two types of procedures come under cholecystectomy:
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
It is the most common alternative surgery use to remove more than 95% of the gallbladder. This method is less invasive and requires 3 to 4 small incisions.
The procedure involves the use of a small tube through the incision. This tube contains a camera (called a laparoscope) along with surgical instruments.
The surgeon removes the gallbladder through one of the incisions.
Open Cholecystectomy
A conventional method that involves making a single large incision at the site and extracting the gallbladder through it.
