The primary role of the digestive system is to help the body break down and absorb food. Also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine – also known as the colon – rectum and anus. Small glands in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine produce juice to help digest food. The digestive system also contains a layer of smooth muscle that moves food along the tract.

Laparoscopic surgery also known as minimally invasive surgery is a surgical procedure performed to treat gastro intestinal diseases. Laparoscopic surgery involves very sophisticated equipment and has several advantages over open surgery. During traditional open surgery the surgeon makes a large incision in the abdomen.
While performing laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes 3-5 small incisions in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a special instrument with a camera attached to it, will be used to view the inside of the abdomen. Other surgical instruments are inserted through the incisions to perform the surgery. The patient will not feel pain as he will be under general anesthesia. Once the surgery is done, the doctor will remove the laparoscope and the incisions will be closed with stitches.
