Gastric bypass surgery is a type of weight loss surgery. In this surgery, the stomach is divided into one upper small sac with a remaining lower large sac. Because a part of the small intestine is also rearranged. The small stomach sac is then attached to the small intestine, bypassing the large sac. This process results in weight loss by limiting the amount of food consumed and the amount of nutrients absorbed from the gut. Nowadays, this surgical procedure is performed using a laparoscope (a small camera) and is called laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery.
