What is esophageal reflux Disease (GERD)?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition during which acid from the stomach reflux and goes into the esophagus.

What causes GERD?
When you eat, the food goes from your mouth to your stomach through a tube called an esophagus tube. At the lower end of the esophagus may be a small ring of muscle called the Lower oesophageal Sphincter (LES)? Thanks to which the food goes into the stomach. Generally, LES stops immediately after swallowing to stop any reflux of stomach juice into the esophagus. GERD occurs when the LES doesn't function properly causing the acid to flow back and burn the lower esophagus. This flow of acid into the esophagus causes inflammation and ultimately damages the esophagus.
How is GERD diagnosed?
The doctor diagnoses GERD with the symptoms indicated by the patient. An endoscopic examination are often performed when symptoms are abnormal in nature or don't answer initial treatment. This is often through with intravenous sedation to comfort the patient. To look at them a skinny, flexible tube is passed from the mouth to the esophagus and abdomen. It often manifests inflammation or ulcers within the esophagus that time towards damage caused by refluxing acid.
How is laparoscopic surgery performed for GERD?
This operation is performed by making the traditional patient unconscious. The surgeon makes little incision (1 cm) within the upper abdomen and inserts a tube inside the abdomen. He will insert a telescope through the cannula attached to a miniature video camera that provides him and therefore the operating team an outsized view of your internal organs on a video monitor. Then he will place four other additional cannula through short (5 mm) cuts to accommodate special long devices. In surgery, the lower extremity of the esophagus becomes fully active. The wide gap is narrowed sufficiently by suturing then a neighbourhood of the abdomen is made by wrapping a neighbourhood of the abdomen round the lower esophagus (fundoplication). This fundoplication acts as a valve. This prevents the acid from the stomach from returning to the esophagus.
