Vegetarian

Bariatric surgery entails long-term modification in the dietary pattern of patients. The diet is low in calories with high protein and low in carbohydrates and fats. The diet is gradually progressed from a clear liquid to a normal diet over several stages to allow the person to adjust to the new anatomy and allow the internal organs to heal.

             

Phase 1 – Clear Liquid Diet (2-5 Days)

This diet basically aims at providing adequate water and minimum calories to avoid dehydration and ketosis. This diet should be continued till the staple line heals and the swelling subsides. The intake should be 30-50 ml at one time, every half to one hour, sipped slowly and not gulped. Straws should not be used as then more air is taken in and satiety occurs faster. Avoid adding sugar to water/beverages.

1. Water
2. Lime water
3. Coconut water
4. Flavored water
5. Green tea
6. Apple juice
7. Orange juice
8. Clear vegetable soup
9. Dilute skim milk/soy milk
10. Dal water/soup/Rice water

Phase 2 – Full Liquid Diet (5-15 Days)

It includes all of the items in phase 1 diet and the general instructions remain the same. The quantity can be increased slightly (70- 100 ml/sitting) taken every 1-2 hours. Water should be taken separately to avoid overfilling the stomach.
1. Dal
2. Dilute porridge
3. Milk shake without sugar
4. Thicker vegetable soup
5. Protein shakes
6. Fruit Smoothies without sugar (apple, banana, strawberry, cranberry).

Phase 3 – Puree/Soft Diet (2-4 Weeks)

It includes items in phase 1 and 2 along with the following items. Other foods can be taken provided they are softened in a blender to make a puree. Meals can now be taken every 2-3 hours in a minimum of 6-8 times/day
1. Khichdi
2. Dalia
3. Soaked soft cereals
4. Cereal/ Baby foods
5. Mashed potatoes
6. Cooked mashed vegetables
7. Grated cottage cheese/Paneer
8. Boiled soft vegetables
9. Fat free yogurt/curd
10. Boiled mashed rice/Idlis

Phase 4 – Normal Diet (>1 Month)

1. All foods are allowed but portion sizes should be 25 % of the pre-operative diet
2. Meals should be taken every 4 hours; minimum 4-6 meals/day
3. Liquids should be separated from solids
4. Water to be consumed half hour prior or one hour after the meal
5. Eat slowly, chew thoroughly
6. Limit the intake of aerated drinks, coffee, fibrous/tough foods
7. Avoid excess salt/sugar
8. Take proteins (e.g. – paneer, dal, soybean) first during the meal; carbs should be consumed later.
